10th Annual Crayfish Festival in Lüderitz
I recently visited the remote Southern town of Lüderitz for its 10th Annual Crayfish Festival. Located on the Atlantic Coast, this quaint German town comes alive once a year to celebrate its seafood industry. Crayfish (aka “lobster”) are a major export from Namibia (particularly to Asia), but they kept more than enough for the locals and the tourists to enjoy at Festival time. Enjoy the photos!
The 10th Annual Crayfish Festival!
The festival took over the pier and the waterfront.
Against the backdrop of the town climbing up the hill.
The center of the festivities.
Namibian crayfish …
I didn’t try them all, but enjoyed all that I did!
And oysters from Walvis Bay.
No Namibian festival would be complete without traditional foods like these nuts, seeds and Mopane worms.
Most days were sunny and warm, but there were also foggy mornings.
As is common in Namibia, most of the side streets are unpaved.
German architecture from the early 1900s dominates the townscape.
The house “built by diamonds,” which were mined nearby.
The town’s maritime history is reflected in some of the neighborhood architecture.
Lüderitz is basically a rock against the coast line …
… and everything is built upon that rock.
My accommodation: the small “igloo” at the top of the hill.
Most days were sunny and the view spectacular!
Other days, the view was marred by the fog.
Regardless of the weather conditions, it was always beautiful …

Until 2019, I served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Namibia focused on Community Economic Development. Before that, I was a high-tech executive, small business owner, consultant and business broker.
